One is the Arena District's Garage Bar, a rock and roll bar in what was formerly the Adobe Gillas building.

The Garage offers a great bar menu with some amazing chili, and besides from Bar Louie it's the only place downtown where I can get tots. They've also got a great beer selection that includes some really hard to find brews.

VENUE INFO:
147 Vine St
Columbus, OH 43215
614-224-3002
www.thegaragebar.net/columbus

Being a Cleveland-born bar, they're also a great choice for watching Cavs and Browns games. They also host a Thursday night Bike Night across from one of the biggest lots downtown. Great place to check out next time you're headed to the Arena and Park St Districts.

- Justin Moodley
www.ColumbusParty.com

Kicking Off Lodge Bar's Mug Night TONIGHT!

Tonight is the 1st night of Lodge Bar Columbus and their new college mug night. It might just be locals taking what they have for granted, but many people don't even know what's right under their nose. Here are five major factors in making Columbus into the culturally enriching area it is.

1) THE COLUMBUS ZOO (www.columbuszoo.com) - Jack Hanna and monkeys... do we really need to say more? OK, well they also have a skating rink, carousel, train & pony rides, a boat ride, and other seasonal attractions.

What you should know: Columbus Zoo is a member of The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (only 8 places in Ohio are). The Zoo is open every day of the year, and have extended hours (till 6pm) between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Adult tickets are $9 and pre-sales are available. The winter is down time for them so you won't have to worry about lines or over crowdedness. By spring, expect all the attractions to be back at full swing.

2) FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY (www.fpconservatory.org) - The original Franklin Park Conservatory was built in 1895. The animals that were housed there in the 1920;s actually became the 1st animals for the Columbus Zoo. The conservatory features a number of different exhibitions throughout the year including photography, sculpture, painting, and models.

What you should know: The conservatory houses a signature collection of glass blown sculptures by Dale Chihuly. Franklin Park is the only botanical garden in the world to own one of Chihuly's signature art collections. They're currently running an interesting exhibition: The Amazing Chocolate Tree. Adult admission is only $6.50.

3) COSI (www.cosi.org/index.asp) - COSI happens to be one of the top science centers in the nation. The "Center of Science & Industry" was built in the 60's and has served millions of people since its inception. The entire building houses over 300 exhibitions that delve into space, the ocean, life, and more.

What you should know: COSI is home to the only high-wire unicycle in the United State. In April, Dr. David Chesebrough takes over as President and CEO of the center. COSI is home to a 7 story, giant screen theater. By February a new exhibition with living reptiles will be inside COSI. The center has over 100,000 square feet for exhibitions. Adult tickets start at $12.50 and the center closed by 5pm every day but Sunday.

4) THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM OF ART (www.columbusmuseum.org) - The museum boasts works by Picasso, Monet, and Rockwell. Currently they feature Renoir's Women, an amazing impressionist collection by Pierre-Auguste. The museum raised over 3 million dollars last year through contributions, memberships, and grants so that they're able to bring in great exhibitions.

What you should know: Their gourmet cafe alone is enough reason to stop in. If you're looking to learn about the art, take a tour, they're only $3. Adult admission is $6 and students is $4. Thursday evenings they stay open till 8:30pm (usually 5:30).

5) CAPA (www.capa.com/columbus) - CAPA performances take place at a variety of venues. These venues include: Ohio Theatre, Palace Theatre, Southern Theatre, Capitol Theatre, Riffe Center Studios, and Shubert Theater. They include music and performances of all types of genres.

What you should know: They have a "High 5" program which allows teens to purchase discount tickets. CAPA has invested over 30 million dollars back into it's theaters which are truly world class. Ninety percent of their income comes through ticket sales and rentals of their venues. Ticket prices vary a lot based on the event and seating section.

In addition to these, the many universities surrounding Central Ohio also host special events and exhibitions. With February 14th right around the corner, we should probably also mention that these are great places for a date. Check out their websites for current information and contact numbers.
www.ColumbusParty.com

The Greatest Party Songs Ever

When looking at the greatest party songs ever, you really have to consider what songs really appeal to just about any party. Weddings might be the best gauge to what music we truly want to celebrate to. Who knows, maybe in 25 years some of the great tracks of this decade will be considered some of the best of all time.

Below is a list of the Top 10 party songs of all time, each listed with a little bit of information you may not know about either the musicians or the song itself.

10) Celebration - Kool & The Gang (1980)
The only #1 hit of their career, "Celebration" kept up with the rhythm and soul people were used to from Kool & The Gang. In the 80's, "Celebration" was actually a favorite with many professional sports teams. Unbeknownst to most, Kool and other members of the band were born in Youngstown, Ohio.

9) The Locomotion - Kylie Minogue (1988)
The first of a few songs on this list that did better after being covered. In 1962, the song was first released by Little Eva and reached to the top of the charts in the US. Eva actually stated that she didn't like the new version of her song when Kylie released the cover in 1988.

8) C'mon Ride The Train - Quad City DJ's (1996)
It's one of the few songs from the 90's that really has stood the test of time and reached past age and culture barriers. To present day, people are still "choo-choo'ing" across the dance floor and having a great time. The song single handedly brought back the conga line without the need of tiki torches.

7) Mony Mony - Billy Idol (1987)
The song was originally sung by Tommy James before Billy Idol covered it. It's hard to believe that such a fun and ridiculous song wasn't made in the 80's, but in the 60's with the same guy that performed with the Shondells! In 1987, Billy "rode is pony" all the way to a number one hit.

6) Shout - Otis Day & The Nights (1978)
The 1978 release o a movie called "Animal House" put Otis Day & The Nights on the map. The song was actually written by The Isley Brothers in 1959, but didn't become a cornerstone of party music until the toga scene in the move. And Otis is still jamming. You can actually book him to play at your next event.

5) 1999 - Prince (1982)
In the 21st century, who thought we'd all still be partying like it's 1999? Seventeen years before the date, prince was singing about the millennium. And oddly enough, well after the date we're still enjoying the song. Prince actually wrote and composed the entire song on his own.

4) The Electric Boogie - Marcia Griffiths (1976)
The song is the boogie... the dance is the slide... Marcia Griffiths, a backup singer for Bob Marley performed the song for writer Bunny Wailer. The song is internationally recognized and played in tons of different languages around the world. Unfortunately for Marcia and Bunny, the song was never a Top 40 hit.

3) Love Shack - B52's (1989)
Inspired by a Temptation's song in the 70's, Love Shack was a huge breakthrough for the B52's into US mainstream music culture. Before their late 80's release, the band had a small cult following. And all you Simpson's fans will be happy to know that they really performed "Glove Slap" on the animated hit.

2) YMCA - The Village People (1978)
Only OSU fans have their arms up in the air as much as The Village People did. As much as many loved Macho Man, YMCA gave something to their listeners that not many songs of their time did... They gave guys that couldn't dance an opportunity to get out on the dance floor.

1) Louie Louie - Richard Berry (1957)
The 2nd song from the Animal House movie soundtrack is also one of the most covered songs of all time with over 1,000 versions already released. At the time of it's release, the song was considered highly controversial and was actually investigated by the FBI and FCC for obscenity.

Tony Bullario
Sept 01, 2009
www.ColumbusParty.com

Interview - DJ Surge

You may have heard his name on the radio, situated right in the middle of commercials for special events at Mynt Ultralounge – and likewise, if you've been to Mynt, you've probably grooved to tunes mixed by DJ Surge. With 11 years of DJing up his sleeve and credits as a remixer and producer, DJ Surge is no stranger to creatively spinning mashups and popular 80's and hip hop jams. Here, he gives ColumbusParty.com a little insight to the man behind the mixer:

Who: DJ Surge

Where/when you can find him: Mynt Ultra Lounge; Thurs-Sat

Biggest influences: Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, DJ Magic Mike— I have respect for anyone who works hard to make something from nothing. There are so many, I could go on and on…

How do you determine what mix of songs/genres to play? Does it differ from night-to-night and crowd-to-crowd? It's completely up to what I think the crowd is feeling.

Who is your favorite artist to play around with? Michael Jackson or Jay-Z

What is a sure-fire crowd pleaser? Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"

I know you like to mix the old with the new; do you think this especially appeals to the post-college young adults? I always tell people there are really only two kinds of music: "Good" and "Bad". I prefer to only play "Good"!!! But I mix it up with a lot of different genres so everyone can get involved in the music.

What was the most fun event that you have DJ'd? The year I spent in Vegas- so much energy!

Most rewarding aspect of what you do: Knowing I made someone feel good and forget about any problems they had before they stepped into the party. There is nothing better than seeing the crowd moving to what you do!

Lydia Johnson
Jun 20, 2009
www.ColumbusParty.com

Taste of Winter

Summer's gone and so the Malibu and Cuervo goes back on the shelf, awaiting the return of crushed ice and warmer days. While straight whiskey is sure to warm you up from the inside out, there are ways to get toasty (and tipsy) for more sensitive palates.

The easiest way to warm up with creative drinks that require minimal ingredients is to start out with a staple: coffee. Coffee plus alcohol is like the original “Redbull and Vodka”, so if you need a mid-party pick-me-up, heat things up by sipping on a little java. Anything can kick up the bite of a coffee drink by adding Amaretto, Irish whiskey (such as the cream-based Baileys), a coffee liqueur (try Tia Maria, Kahlua and Starbucks) or a simple bourbon.

After you’ve added the good stuff, feel free to dress your drink up as you would your morning blend. Go ahead and slap some sugar, cinnamon, cream or even better, whipped cream, into your mug. You don’t have to save ordering the Irish Coffee for after dinner paired with a cheesecake at a restaurant. Feel free to brew a pot and start experimenting.

The family favorite this time of year is always eggnog. For those who do not celebrate this tradition, eggnog is a frothy beverage made from milk, cream, sugar, beaten eggs and a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg. But that’s the kid stuff. Add rum, brandy or whiskey and you’ll get why grandpa’s jokes get less coherent on Christmas.

Historically, eggnog was always served warm, but contemporary society often imbibes the yellow stuff refrigerated. So if it’s too cold to hit the bars and the trash bags on your windows just aren’t keeping out the chill, don’t be afraid to nuke the whole carton and settle in with three rounds of A Christmas Story. And during the holiday season, what’s says “festive!” better than a sparkly pretty froufrou martini thing that looks like Christmas threw up in it? Nearly every restaurant and bar has a holiday inspired cocktail with a colorful rim of sugar, a splash of champagne or gooey caramel drizzled in the glass.

To make the most obnoxious sparkly beverage you can, break out ingredients such as Goldschlager, Apple Pucker, spumante and cranberry juice and mix away with vodka or gin to create endless combinations to knock you off your parumpapumpum.

Whether you decide to brave the cold or pass out on your own floor, please remember to party responsibly and try to make it to the New Year with some element of finesse.

Happy Holidays from the CP crew!

- Lydia Johnson
www.ColumbusParty.com

Signature Martini List

1) The Scarlett Pom-Pom Tini

INGREDIENTS
- 1.5oz Pomegranate Vodka
- 1.5oz Melon Vodka
- 1oz Cranberry Juice
- Lemon Twist

PREPARATION - In a mixer with a small amount of ice, combine the pomegranate vodka, melon vodka, and cranberry juice.
